A REVIEW OF THE YEAR 2018
The Lab started in 2018
in a small office in the department of computer sciences. We started with about
five students and a lecturer. We later expanded into 10 students and a few more
lecturers that same year. The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ogundipe graciously gave us
a workspace at the central research lab building (CRL) UNILAG. The following
were achieved in 2018.
1. International Competition: Our team represented Nigeria in a robot-soccer competition held in Ethiopia between 29th June – 5th July 2018 with our team emerging in 4th place. This is a yearly event and our team learned a lot. The application of such a competition has certain positive aftermath in education, and this motivated us in organizing the first of its kind ‘UNILAG Robotics & AI competition’ (12th December 2018) as a prelude to an up-scaled, nationwide Robotics & AI competition for tertiary institutions
2. Robotics Workshop: workshops on robotics were organized by AiRol to prepare the students for the forthcoming competition. The maiden edition was held on 20th October 2018 at UNILAG. These workshops introduced participants to quick starts on robotics projects, working with microcontrollers and creating software for robotics projects amongst many other related topics. The workshop was attended by undergraduate students of UNILAG.
3.
Robotics
Exhibition in Eko Hotel Lagos and Canada- Nigeria Summit Abuja (May 2018 and November
2018)
The team exhibited some of our robots at an innovation program in Eko Hotel and Canada-Nigeria innovation and entrepreneur summit in May and November 2018 respectively.
4. UNILAG Robotics Competitions: The maiden edition of the UNILAG robotics competition took place on the 12th of December, 2018. The competition was well attended by students, the staff of UNILAG and interest groups from the industry. Registration for the national competition is presently ongoing.

UNILAG CSR on empowering the
grassroots (October 2018 - December 2018)
The program is
an initiative of Prof. T. Ogundipe that aims to provide free basic software
development training to young girls in secondary schools. It had its maiden in
2018 with the University of Lagos international school. The program trained
over fifty (50) students. The training lasted for three (3) months and training
sessions were held on Saturdays only within the University Campus premises.
